The Town Smithy is a Tier I shop built on a Workshop Courtyard plot. It is unlocked through the Artisans I technology, which costs 75 red and 25 green technology points.
Restoring it gives +2 Village reputation and opens the Smithy trader. The building can later be upgraded into Smithy II.
You are not restricted to one exact visual spot in the Town map. Smithy-compatible Workshop Courtyard plots are listed in the Town, Eastern Districts, and Central Districts, so the requirement is the plot type rather than one specific building shell.
The Town Smithy Requires Three Different Kits
Once Artisans I is unlocked and you have a valid Workshop Courtyard plot, the Tier I Smithy requires:

The Town Smithy Is More Valuable Than Just +2 Reputation
Finishing the Smithy opens its Tier I blacksmith trader with 10 different goods. The initial stock includes basic metal materials such as Bronze Scrap, Bronze Ingots, Bronze Detail, Bronze Nails, and Polished Bronze, along with equipment and tools.
That gives the Smithy a useful role when you need a small amount of metal material without stopping everything to craft it yourself.
The trader is also listed as producing 20 bronze per day and 8 Likes per week, and restoring the shop adds repeatable Building Materials I Town orders. Those orders can award Likes while paying for delivered boxes, so the Smithy contributes to more than simply opening another merchant.

The Production Smithy Goes in the Underground Factory
If you already unlocked a Smithy technology but cannot find anywhere to place the station, you are probably looking for the Factory version rather than the Town shop.

You Can Reach the Workshop Through the Mine Route
One confirmed route into the underground workshop involves clearing the blockage inside the old Mine in the Forest.
Opening that passage connects the Mine with the larger underground Factory network. Players also report that completing this connection unlocks Zombie Mining, making the Mine route especially useful because it advances both Factory access and resource automation at the same time.
If you have reached the Forest Mine but have not yet opened its deeper passage, finish that connection before searching above ground for somewhere to place the Factory Smithy.

The Factory Smithy Uses the Underground Resource Network
The Factory Smithy is designed around the underground automation system rather than normal manual inventory handling.
Players have reported reaching the point where Iron Ore and Coal are stored nearby but the Smithy still does not recognize those materials. Current community discussion points toward the Factory's resource nodes, porter network, and conveyor system as the intended supply chain rather than dropping materials directly into the station.
Porter stations can move gathered resources toward the starting nodes at the southern end of the workshop area, including materials coming from Zombie Mining. From there, the Factory's transport infrastructure is used to move resources through production.

If you are trying to process Iron Ore inside the underground production network, continue the Mine and Factory progression until you reach the large workshop and can place the production Smithy there.
